Ares is a typical representative of the small steamboats that sailed the Baltic and North Seas at the beginning of the 20th century. They were also equipped with sails – just in case – should the engine have a breakdown.
The steamer Australia was built in Rettig’s shipyard in 1862 and was owned the first four years by PC Rettig & Co. During the period of 1868-1898, the ship was part of the Haegerstrand fleet. Probably around 1871, the ship was re-rigged to a barque. In December 1898, the ship was sold to Jäde & Co in Lübeck for 6,200 Swedish kronor.
The steamer Drott was part of the Haegerstrand fleet at the beginning of the 20th century. She sailed on routs from Gävle to the Continent and England. Drott was blown up by mines on January 21 1915, outside of Raumo (Finland), five of the eighteen-strong crew died. The ship sank in two and a half minutes.
The ship Gustav Vasa was one of the many ships built in Gävle in the 19th century.
Peru was a fully rigged ship built in 1859. It was the same year as AB PJ Haegerstrand was founded in Gävle. The ship was part of the Haegerstrand fleet during the period of 1876-1897. She sailed on routs to Australia, the Mediterranean and the West Indies. Peru foundered on November 14, 1897, at the reef of Skagen on a journey from Leith to Gothenburg, loaded with coals.
Thetis was a steamer built in 1884. She was part of Haegerstrands fleet which frequented the Baltic and North Seas at the beginning of the 20th century.
